Adding Unlike Fractions
When fractions have different denominators, you must find their Least Common Multiple LCM and make it the least common denominator LCD. Once the denominators are the same you can add the fractions.
Adding Unlike Fractions

When fractions have the same bottom number (denominator) they are called Like Fractions.  When fractions have different bottom numbers, they are referred to as Unlike Fractions.  When you are adding unlike fractions you must make them like fractions.  You do that by creating equivalent fractions using the denominators and finding their LCM and making it the LCD.
